ART AS A PRAYER FOR OUR PLANET
Ekaterina Sky is an artist. Working in watercolor and sustainable 24K gold leaf on archival paper, she makes what she calls impact art: work in which the painting and its effect on the living world are inseparable. Painting is the center of the practice. Installation, performance, and community engagement extend outward from it.
Her central series, Prayer for the Earth, is a body of visual prayers. Beneath the sustainable 24K gold leaf of each painting lies a universal prayer, written by hand and sealed from view, played aloud through a chip embedded in the work, so a viewer can listen to what they cannot read. Sacred geometry, gold ground, and sound make the paintings contemplative spaces rather than images alone. Related series carry the same cosmology outward. At the Core We Are One renders the genetic code shared by all living things as a sacred diagram, and Forests of the World paints the flying rivers, the vapor that forests breathe into the sky and that carries rain across continents.
The work was formed in the rainforests of Borneo, where Sky witnessed both the destruction of ancient ecosystems and the extraordinary effort being made to restore them. It proceeds from a conviction that painting can do more than raise awareness, and that beauty reaches people where data and argument do not.
Sky has exhibited at the Coral Gables Museum, shown and spoken at COP30, and presented Forests of the World on stage at Carnegie Hall. She works alongside conservation organizations and community leaders internationally, and a defined, receipted share of every sale supports forest protection.
“Creating Harmony Through Art”
I create art as a form of prayer.
My work begins with a simple belief: that we are not separate from nature, but expressions of it. The forests, rivers, animals, and ecosystems that sustain life are not outside of us. They are part of who we are.
The images come to me in silence, through meditation and long vows of stillness, as though the living world were perceiving itself through my hand. I have come to call this practice Anima Mundi, after the ancient idea of the soul of the world.
My paintings are invitations to remember: to remember that beneath our differences, we share the same breath, the same Earth, and the same future.
In Prayer for the Earth, each artwork holds a handwritten universal prayer beneath sustainable 24K gold leaf. The prayers appear in many languages, reflecting a belief that care for the planet transcends borders, cultures, and religions. Through watercolor, gold, symbolism, and sound, the works become spaces for contemplation and reconnection.
I see art not as decoration but as a force that shapes culture. Throughout history, art has inspired movements, challenged systems, preserved memory, and expanded what people believe is possible. My intention is to contribute to that lineage by creating work that awakens reverence for life and inspires meaningful action.
In the language of art history, my work joins the sacred geometry of Emma Kunz and Hilma af Klint with the optical rigor of Op art turned toward devotion, and the natural-history symmetry of Ernst Haeckel, all in service of the living world. I call the practice impact art.
I am making a lifelong work: a permanent site where the natural world can be met as sacred, and where the ground it stands on is itself protected. It will take the rest of my life.
Ultimately, my practice is about relationship: with ourselves, with each other, and with the Earth that makes all life possible.
Every painting is a question: what kind of world are we creating with the life force we have been given?
